What A Novel Idea Part One - Memoirs of Our Imaginations

Hey Friends!  (You guys are our friends, right?)
We have a confession to make to you all right here on the internet.  Are you ready?  We are total and completely undeniable nerds.  Whew, we said it.  We always have been.  More to that point, we love to lose ourselves in books and the worlds that they create for us.  We are going to assume that a lot of you feel the same way and that you too spend countless hours on the internet reading threads about your favorite books in-between actually reading and rereading all your favorite books.
But, dear reader, have you ever thought about writing a book for yourself?  Have you ever created an idea so meaningful and influential (at least to yourself) that you had to share it with the world?  Have you tried to write it down?

Here’s the deal.  It’s a lot of work to write a book.  Forget coming up with a noteworthy idea and writing and rewriting until it resembles something coherent.  There’s publishing to think about, editing, marketing, all the boring stuff (to some) that has to be done for the book to be successful.  And then, after all that work, people might not like it.  And so, we have another confession to make: We (both of us) have let these things prevent us from writing a book.  It has always been in the back of our minds, even before we met each other.

We are going to guess that this is the case for at least some of you guys, too (we are doing a lot of assuming today, but hey, all of the most complicated engineering problems can be solved if you have enough assumptions).  And that’s completely fair.  There are a lot of questions to be asked when writing a book and sometimes the answers are scary.  We are both engineers and in the engineering spirit, we question everything.  We approach every situation with the same logical, stepwise manner, and we ask questions, a lot of questions.  How much time will it take to write the novel?  What are the steps to get it published?  What is the cost?  Is the idea marketable?  What are the risks?  What steps can be taken to mitigate the risk?  What is the chance for failure?  How large will the failure be?  Where will the failure be, with the equipment, with the customer, with the quality of the writing, with the marketing?  And the list goes on…

Today we are announcing to the world that we are throwing all the risk analysis out the window.  We are going for something big.  Something bigger than www.zazzle.com/Catpicsallday* .  We are going to co-write a novel (because everything is more manageable when you have an awesome team).  There will be no risk analysis, no mitigation, and we may fail.  This could be the biggest failure of our lives.  But we are going to write the novel we’ve always wanted to give to the world (and wanted to read).  The customer might not like it, a publisher might not see any worth, an editor might tell us to scrap the idea and go in a different direction.  These are all things that can happen, but we are going for it anyway.  We will be having many fun and entertaining discussions with each other about the direction, the characters, and the plot points that move the novel forward. There will be plenty of erasing and starting over by our own accord.  One of the perks with being in a great team, we don’t get offended when the other says an idea sucks in so many words :D.  Instead, it can become the theme for comical blog-posts. Lucky for us, the engineering side of our brain helps out with that!  I mean, we’ve written like 6 blog posts so far, so we clearly know what we are doing.

So in addition to all the other random things we decide are blog-worthy, we are now going to provide insight into our book-writing process.  We’ll be sure to share with you all our inspirations, our writing techniques, resources we’ve found helpful, all our frustrations, personal successes, and hopefully some self-discovery along the way.  And then with some insight, hopefully some of you will choose to do the same and follow your creative dreams.

A Possible hint at our theme for the novel. That and Quinn likes the night vision feature.
So, here we are in another moment of clarity.  Our lives are (once again) taking a new turn that hopefully won’t end with us bruised and battered along the road (although that is very possible considering we may develop over-confidence due to our kickboxing skillz).  We hope you enjoy our adventure through the process of discovery and our engineering mindset, mixed with our bizarre imaginations, of how to write a meaningful story.  If, nay, when, we get to the stage of being edited and preparing to submit to publishers, you all will be the first to get information about the actual story.  In the meantime, we’ll be dropping hints and pieces of the book for you all to sample (we do want this to be somewhat a surprise).  This is our new beginning, writing the Memoirs of Our Imaginations.Description: https://mail.google.com/mail/images/cleardot.gif

Until then,

A Glorious Battle

Hey Everyone!

We’ve said before that the purpose of this blog was to find new directions for our lives, to try new things, and welcome new hobbies (not that we would ask too much out of an internet forum).  I am a firm believer that you can always learn new things about yourself if you give yourself the chance to look.  For example, I have been kickboxing for a few months now (our first experience was detailed in a different post), and even though I knew before that I was a competitive person, there was no way for me to know how competitive I really am until I signed up for those kickboxing classes.  Here’s the story:

I was standing at my usual bag wrapping my hands before class (that’s right, gloves and wrap; my life is pretty hardcore), getting my head in the zone.  The usual 7:00 pm class people were there, chatting, stretching, and doing the same mental preparation.  That’s when a new girl walked into class and took up camp at the bag right in front of me.

I have to step away from the story to detail a few things.  The gym is set up with rows of bags in front of each other.  The two rows are connected to the same framework.  Therefore, the boxers face each other when working out at the bag.  So even though we don’t have any actual contact with the person in front of us, it gives the illusion that we are punching the same bag.  Also, to fully appreciate the story and my attitude about the situation, I’ll have to describe myself for you all.  I stand about 5’7”, about 120 pounds.  Basically, I’m tallish and lanky, and not surprisingly, pretty clumsy as a result.  By appearances I don’t look super athletic.  Like maybe I could pass for a (slow) runner, but I’m certainly not going to be bench pressing any impressive amount of weight.  And while I’m proud to say I can make it through most of the class before feeling like falling on the floor and giving up on everything, I still get that feeling of falling on the floor and giving up on everything.

Now back to the girl.  This girl was about 5’9” or 5’10”.  I couldn’t guess her weight, but her abs looked like they were trying to jump out of her tank top.  Her hair was in a perfect ponytail.  Basically, she was kickboxing Barbie.  She walked straight up to the bag in front of me and got out her gear (This is an important note: She was new, but had her gear readily available).  She had this bored expression on her face and wasn’t particularly interested in any of the chatting going on around her.  Then, while we are all lounging around and stretching, she just starts doing pushups.  For fun.  That’s when people started taking note of her presence, and she was aware of it.  She got up from her pre-warm up-warm up and looked straight at me.  I even think she did one of those menacing I’m-going-to-destroy-everyone half-smiles.  And we both knew.  Today was a battle, and only one of us could walk away victorious.

Then class started.  As it turned out, we were pretty evenly matched.  We were punching at about the same speed, kicking at about the same height.  She was killing me in pushups, but I definitely had her beat in squats.  All was going well, until there were only about 15 minutes left in class.  Both of us were pretty worn out.  We expended all the energy we could up to that point.  We were punching and kicking so hard the bags threatened to fly right off the hooks.  We recognized the fatigue in each other and were starting to call a truce.  But then, the instructor called for an attack round (a round where you do anything you want, any kicks, any punches, whatever you can throw in the time allowed) and neither one of us wanted to be one to back down.  We stepped up to our respective bags and the fight began anew.  She came out of the box much stronger than I did.  There was a wave of fury beaming out of her face.  She was in this to win. And right when I thought she had, her legs betrayed her and she started feeling weak.  In the last 10 seconds of the attack round she slowed down to break and I knew that was my moment.  I gave everything I had left knowing it was only 10 more seconds to victory.  I punched harder than I had ever punched, kicked higher than I have ever kicked.  And when she paused and stepped away from the bag, I knew than I had won.  And with that victory I threw one last glorious punch… missed the bag and uppercut myself right in the face.  I guess you could say we both won that one.

So now I know, I will literally punch myself in the face before stepping away from a battle.  It seems pretty ridiculous (and embarrassing), but it did help me realize that I can push past limits that I thought existed.  So many of the things we tell ourselves to keep from failing are completely made up in our heads.  Sometimes we just need a punch in the face to get some peace of mind.  Lesson learned.  And of course, I encourage all of you to go out there and challenge yourself.  Push past your limits and learn something new.  It’s totally worth it, I promise.

Also, try kickboxing.  It makes you seem so badass.

Cat Pics All Day – Is It a Good Business Model?

So, in our earlier post, we went through how the business was started. Now it’s time to stay current, and let everyone know how it’s been going for the last few months. Which, unfortunately, has not been great. Far from it in fact. The complete opposite of how it was going to go in our heads. Within a few weeks, we had made ourselves business cards, started a Facebook page, and started posting in the Zazzle forums to try and get our name out there.

It worked! People had provided positive feedback in our comments section, we seemed to be getting a decent amount of traffic to our page, and we are now up to 41 likes on the Zazzle page! If that was our only measure of success, we would be saying were doing quite well for ourselves. But, like most businesses, profits do factor in there somewhere, and right now we have none. Zilch. Nada. A big fat goose egg in the sales department. What is going wrong? We have yet to figure that out. I know we aren’t professional graphic designers or anything. AND we didn’t go to school for business management, marketing, sales, etc. But come on, its cats! We even have a few designs made by a guest contributor (Quinn’s sister), and still nothing. These designs are super cute, and one has a unique vintage feel. If you’d like to see it on more products, let us know!

We definitely could use some constructive feedback, because we do want this to be successful and create cool designs that people enjoy. It’s not just about the money. It never was with this site, we just wanted to get out there and put our creative side of our brains to the test. Generally people have the “Oh, I could have done that” mentality, and we are guilty of that too, so instead of saying/thinking “We could have done that” we decided to change our attitude to “We did do that, we tried, we put ourselves out there”. Well, here we are. And we’d  like to think some of the stuff we have created is cute and fun. Granted, not everything is going to be purrfect, there is a learning curve after all, but without the sales letting us know which design style to go with, we are floating out there in Zazzle Limbo. And it is not a great feeling. So, if you’re a Zazzler, or a consumer, or both, if you like cats, or if you don’t like cats, please take a look at what we have and comment on our blog (Not the Zazzle page please). If you like what you see, letting us know by purchasing is even better!
Once we get established, we are hoping to get some different promotional ideas started.  One idea that we have tossed around is to have donations made to different animal foundations using the funds from the sales for a specific month or from a certain product. The donations would be made based on voting done right here on our blog! Unfortunately, we can’t start ideas like that yet without any money. And we don’t want to do something like that without getting an idea of what people would be happy purchasing. So, the dilemma continues. In the meantime, we are just continuing with the development of new designs in the hope that something eventually clicks, and we get out to the right audience.
To everyone who works hard and tries out their new ideas, we wish you the best of luck! Feel free to share your stories, we would love to hear them!

Cat Pics All Day – The Beginning

Well, here it is.  This shall be our first discussion about the Zazzle business we started a couple of months ago.  It was one of those crazy evenings where you are in the right state of mind, eating nachos, and ideas just come to you.  Our meeting originally started off by discussing the algae oil business, you know, something smart and sciencey, and something that would make a difference in the world.  And we actually started coming up with some pretty good ideas to be tested for the extraction of oil from algae.  I think one idea involved a Ninja, but hey, we were trying.  (We will leave what type of Ninja up to your imagination.)  After, you know, 15 minutes, we were pretty sure we were on to something, and it sounded a heck of a lot better than what we do now.  And we decided, this was it, our golden ticket, and we would be “saving” the world in the process.  That is, of course, if the world was smart enough to listen.  This is still in debate.

The algae idea had been brewing with us for a couple of weeks at the point of meeting up for nachos.  We even bought a couple of books on entrepreneurship, the first step being “learning how to spell and pronounce entrepreneurship without using Google.”  (Spell check in Word wasn’t giving a correction option, we had spelled it so badly.)  So there we were with a couple of (brilliant) ideas in the bag for algae extraction, and no way to fund the ideas for small scale feasibility before going to investors.  AND that’s where we hit our first road bump.  Actually, it was more like the road had been torn in half and our little car couldn’t even pretend to attempt to get to the other side.  It was amidst this huge moment of crappy realization that we would never be able to afford to start a business when we had our next brilliant idea.  “Let’s fund our business by starting ANOTHER business!”  See, Quinn had already been working with Zazzle and designing shirts, and she made a WHOPPING $100 in the last couple of months of 2012, so that seemed like the perfect starting place.  But what kind of shirts could we possibly design that would afford us this great opportunity, one might ask?  Cat Shirts!  That’s right.  Grumpy Cat is so in right now, and people love the hilarious little creatures.  Plus, there’s like a 50/50 chance people will like cats, and the other 50% love their obvious indifference.  So, why not?

#Cat #Model

We started furiously writing down our shirt ideas immediately, and in between the writing, we were laughing (and probably sounded like mental patients to anyone remotely near us) because this idea is brilliant and there was no way it could fail.  Right?  Really guys, right?

Using Zazzle, there was no overhead cost to us, which was great, so everything we sold would automatically put us in the positives.  And so, www.zazzle.com/catpicsallday* was born.  This was the beginning of our run of “Best Day EVER,” completely based on the ideas we came up with, and the immediate follow through of those ideas.  (The second idea came later after Quinn’s archery lesson where, over froyo, we decided we could totally turn archery into a profitable profession by being awesome and entering competitions.  HA.  Seriously though.)  We digress.

About a week later, we had the site up and running with two pretty hilarious and awesome designs posted based on the evolution of species sequence.  For sure we couldn’t go wrong with this, right?  After all, that sequence of pictures is pretty popular and we were reinventing it with cats and funny catch phrases at the bottom.  Did we mention the cats?  See those designs here and let us know what you think (because we still haven’t sold a single one):

And, there it is folks.  The beginning of our business (Cat Pics All Day) created to fund our other business (Oil Extraction From Algae… We may need a better name) which is currently and indefinitely on hold until we actually get some decent funds (from CPAD).  Our fund is currently sitting steady at $0.00.  BUT we may even use the money to fund something else entirely! Who knows, we are kind of creative.  In any case, this is how it all started.  We still have faith though, and will continue to update with all the different approaches we take in our business ventures to grow and get our name out there!

Kickboxing Round 1

Hey Everyone!
In our internet absence, Quinn and I have been doing some interesting things.  I know she already brought you up to speed on the archery.  I can’t wait to get to the range with her!  But, we’ve been doing some other things too! Here is the latest that we have:

Our personal favorite: Kickboxing.  #That’sRight

When people look at us, they aren’t exactly shaking in their boots.  Even though we are well into our second year post-college, we could still pass for high school kids most of the time.  Our combined weight is somewhere in the 215 pound range.  We’re not exactly intimidating monsters… At least not on the outside…  Bwahahaha

Anyway, it’s kind of one of our goals to become badass ninja superstars one day, so we took up the hobby of kickboxing to get us started.  #DreamsCanComeTrue

The first day of kickboxing was kind of intimidating for both of us.  It was kind of like when you change schools or jobs and you feel like everyone is just staring at you, waiting for you to fall flat on your face. The gym is just a big room full of heavy bags that hang pretty much from floor to ceiling.  There were people warming up that look like they could be on the covers of fitness magazines.  The instructors were super enthusiastic, too.  They immediately (as in immediately after we signed a GIANT packet of waivers) pulled us over to the bags to show us basic punches and kicks.  (Apparently a lot of people are intimidated when they first walk into the gym, because the instructor later told us that they attack people right away so they don’t have a chance to change their minds a leave.  Good tactic.)  And that was it.  A 5 minute introduction and we were released to join the other kickboxing regulars.

Putting on our gloves was a defining moment in our kickboxing debut.  As soon as the gloves are on, you feel like you can accomplish so much.  They really give you a sense of purpose and attitude, and they make you look super badass.  Plus, if you aren’t wearing the gloves, the whole thing looks super awkward, and we were awkward enough as it is.  Anyway, as soon as the gloves were on, we knew this was going to be the hobby for us.

We knew that until we started working out, at least.  See, in our heads we knew that we could rock this kickboxing thing.  But, as it turns out, we're both super awkward and clumsy.  I’m sure watching us try to kick and punch and keep up with the calls and everyone else was pretty entertaining for the first 5-10 minutes.  But after that initial awkwardness, we settled in a rhythm.

And then we became all-stars!  There we were, punching away, being swallowed up by the insanely loud dance music and the thumping sound the bags made with each punch and kick.  It was like Insanity, mixed with boxing, mixed with a dance club hidden in some random alley.  I mean, Alice even thought she was going to collapse and die by the end of it (but in a good way).  Basically, it was the thing of dreams.  Our dreams, anyway.  #NailedIt

Our new found kickboxing gym is a great setting for staying motivated for exercise, and really, changing our lives.  As corny as it sounds, every time we step in that place we learn new things about ourselves and we are able to clear our minds enough to come up with better, even crazier (and more awesome) ideas.  Kickboxing is something that has become part of our regular routine, and we do our best not to bail out on a class.  Probably because we are so awesome, and so is kickboxing.  So, if you’re reading this and have never tried kickboxing, Google yourself a kickboxing specific gym in your area and give it a shot!  It’s cool if you don’t like it, but give it an honest-to-goodness effort.  It really is one of the best things we have ever done.

Shooting Arrows... In the Dark?

Hobby Update Weekend One -
I (Quinn) really liked the lesson I took with a bow, and thus am now the proud owner of a Genesis Compound Bow. A blue one to be exact, which is pretty sweet. I decided to bring it on one of my trips home, and thus the ideas began to flow. The first weekend I brought it home, my sister really wanted to make a milk jug filled with water explode. So we set about filling the milk jug and just setting it on the ground. We had started the day with it set on a metal deck chair, but someone (naming no names because you know who you are), hit the chair and snapped the arrow clean in half! Having a limited number of arrows, we opted for the safer route, but this resulted in the arrows being buried in the ground. Luckily we were always able to find them though. Back to the milk jug explosion... sounds pretty epic right? That's what we thought at first. Since it was my sisters idea, she was first up. It takes a couple "warm-up" shots, but she had it! And... nothing. No explosion, no water flying everywhere, nothing. She was super bummed, but no one anticipated that the arrow wouldn't actually go ALL the way through the jug. Instead, it just got stuck in the jug, so when we pulled it out the water, in a very unexciting way, just sort of trickled out of the jug. With that myth busted, we just continued as usual, because hey, even if it didn't explode in a fountain of water it was still satisfying to finally hit the jug!

Hobby Update Weekend Two -
It's Memorial Day weekend, and what better way to show your patriotism than once again shooting a bow in your backyard at a target? This weekends target was a lot more exciting than the first one, and not only did it sound exciting, it stayed exciting until the very last moment. We didn't get the idea until about 8:30 in the evening, but finally we decided on shooting more arrows, and this time we were set on getting the explosion effect. That was it... balloons filled with confetti! What could be a better target? Since it was a Saturday night, we thought we had until 9pm to shop at Hobby Lobby, so off we went. And... it was closed. Apparently it had closed at 8, so we had to re-group and develop a plan B... and that would be Wal-Mart. By this time, the sun was setting, so we had to revise our original plan and by the time we got to the store we were on the hunt for anything that glowed in the dark. And boy did we luck out! Not only did we find glow in the dark balloons, we grabbed a couple glow-sticks to use the insides. We also found glow in the dark sand that would be a prefect balloon filler instead of the confetti, which we probably wouldn't be able to see at this point.Back to the house we drove, super excited about the epicness of most current adventure. What could possibly go wrong with shooting arrows in pitch black at glow in the dark balloons? Nothing. Niente. And so we proceeded with building the target. Good thing my mom had just bought a grill. The balloons were thus attached to "the box the grill was in", which quickly became a catch phrase for the evening. We realized that the glow in the dark balloons actually contained LED lights, which was perfect because we could transfer them to the other, cheaper balloons, and thus keep the supply of glow balloons alive for the next 15 hours of battery life. Not that we would be shooting for 15 hours, but if we had wanted to, the option was there. #15Hours. #BetterThan5Hr.
And thus the target was built.

Our make-shift target. Yes that is another glow balloon hanging from a tree in the background.
Pretty sweet, huh? We all took turns shooting until popping at least one of the balloons, and it was GREAT! It was pretty difficult, because let's face it, it was dark out, we didn't use any lights, because that wouldn't have been fun. Everyone made their shots, and then it was my turn. I was the last to go, and multiple shots in I was getting a little irritated. All of my shots were hitting along the outside edge of the freaking white glow balloon and it was starting to really tick me off. And then I did it, I lost my arrow. Everyone was down by the box looking for it, and couldn't find it. We even shuffled the box around. And then it was felt, a rain drop. Looks like I would be walking in the house a failure. A failure and it was MY bow! WHAT?! We were about to give up looking for the arrow when it was found, directly behind where the box the grill came in was. My sister looked at me and I knew. "Go for the Hail Mary shot! It's all or nothing!" She exclaimed as we hurriedly put the box back in place and I jogged to the distance we had been shooting from. My heart pounding, I knocked the arrow, drew, semi-aimed because it was really dark and hard to see, and then... I released. I held my breath for a split second, and BOOM! The balloon was done, finished, exploded!! I had done it, right before the rain, right after finding the arrow had almost been a lost cause, the last shot of the night! A success, and everyone burst out hollering. So all in all, it was pretty epic. Now my sister and her boyfriend have found an outdoor archery course by them, and my friend was thinking about getting into it as well. It's addicting, and what can I say, totally satisfying when you hit your makeshift target of glow in the dark balloons attached to the box the grill was in.

Archery Anyone?

It’s late February, still way to cold to really get out and do much. One day, I woke up and decided it was time to try something new, something that I was able to do indoors and, when the weather gets nicer, outdoors as well. Got it! Archery! Something I’ve always wanted to try, and totally awesome looking. This is definitely one of those things that says #WeRule. No doubt shooting bows has that attitude. So there it was, my #Awesome moment being put into action. Time to tell Alice! Unfortunately there was a scheduling conflict, so off to the indoor range I went for the first lesson on my own, #Awkward #OHwell.

To start the trip, I left with just barely enough time to make the lesson. Normally, I try to leave a little early if I am going somewhere I have never been before, but alas that was not the case this time. My GPS quit working, of course, as soon as I got off the highway!! I had a vague idea how far off the highway the place was supposed to be, but I still had to turn around several times. The second time, I called the place. Apparently the GIANT arrow out front wasn’t a good enough clue for me… ! #NotObservant.

Now that I am officially 15 minutes late, I walk in and greet the first person I see behind the counter. She doesn’t say much, but points me in the direction of the indoor range area. I introduce myself and get a quick lesson on the history of bows. I almost have to ask what to do next but luckily my instructor comes by and says we can begin. Phew! I was getting a little worried. So, “Are you going to be hunting?” my instructor asks me. What? Me? I tell him no, that I just wanted to give it a try and see how if I liked it. Well, I guess I can chalk up the hunting question to the area I live in. #NotFromHere. Well, here goes nothing!! After getting a quick lesson in the proper way to hold a bow, draw, etc. it's time to start shooting! This is awesome! As it turns out, I ended up being pretty alright for my first go at it. They were even able to move the target back to 30 meters and I was still shooting consistently and hitting the center portion of the target. I know it's not a super far distance, but I was feeling pretty good about myself at this point. Since I was using a compound bow, I asked if I could try a recurve for the last 4 arrows of my lesson. I can totally do this.... 20 lb draw weight..... and off it goes! Wait, what?! I watch, saddened, as the arrow archs right over the target and hits the back wall. Second try, I get a few pointers, and release – this time I hit the target! Too bad it is in the very top corner and not in the actual target portion... Much closer this time! Well, the last two arrows were pretty much an exact replica of the situation. So two arrows missed the target completely, the other two hit the very top right corner of the target. Ehhh... could be a lot worse! I had a great time though, that's for sure. Shooting a compound was easier, but the recurve offered the challenge dynamic which is something I enjoy. As of this post I haven't made it back to the range, but I have already picked out a few bows I am interested in looking at to purchase. Looks like I will be making this into a real hobby and sharing my bow with Alice! If any of you guys have tried out things you've always wanted to do, we would love to hear your comments about what it was and how it turned out for you! :D
